2018 Diza Liga season

The First League (Shaelic: Diza Liga), known as the Bank of Shaelia First League (Shaelic: Šaegéloda Diza Liga) for sponsorship reasons, is the second tier football competition in the country. It was founded in 19XX as a 12-club competition for clubs. As of the 2018 season, its twenty member clubs average more than 10,600 spectators per game. At the conclusion of each season one or two clubs are promoted to the Ganiliga, and three clubs are relegated to the Saza Liga and replaced by the top finishing clubs in that league for the following season.

The competition

Regular season

The twenty clubs in Diza Liga play a 38-game regular season schedule, for a total of 380 games. The season starts in March and runs through October. Each club plays every other club in the table two times (once at home and once on the road). Clubs earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. Clubs are ranked in the league table by total points earned, then goal difference, and then goals scored. If two or more clubs are still tied on points, then head-to-head record is the determining factor.

The club finishing with the most total points after the 38-game regular season schedule is crowned the Diza Liga Champion (Shaelic: Diza Ligada Aviatau), or more commonly by the colloquial form Diliavia.

Club movement

The clubs finishing 19th and 20th in the regular season table are automatically relegated to the Saza Liga for the next season. The club finishing 18th enters the Relegation Playoffs with clubs finishing in the second, third, and fourth spots of the Saza Liga regular season table. Match-ups are scheduled as follows:

  • Diza Liga #18 hosts Saza Liga #4
  • Saza Liga #2 hosts Saza Liga #3
  • Winners meet for Diza Liga spot
